Duracell Coppertop AAA Batteries 20-Count

Batteries batteries batteries!5

I got these about three weeks ago and still haven't used them up yet. So many batteries. Awesome. So far they've lasted about four times as long in my Canon digital point-and-shoot than my Energizer rechargeables. And they're on track to outperform the regular Energizers in my Xbox controllers. I think I'm a coppertop convert. The price is pretty good too--probably not the absolute cheapest but these are real Duracells (not knockoffs) that are far from their expiration date.More detail ...

Sanyo Eneloop AAA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries (4 Pack)

LSD is great.... just keep away from heat!5

According to Sanyo the new eneloop LSD (low self-discharge) NiMH batteries can maintain 85% of its original charge after 1 year of storage. This claim is slightly misleading because it is based on simulation test at 20 degree C. At higher temperature the self-discharge rate is likely to be much higher.

I have tested five of those AA cells (details are given in my review for the eneloop 4-pack). The average energy loss is about 26% after less than 6 months of storage based on manufacturer date codes. This self-discharge rate is about 3 times higher than what Sanyo claimed. However it is still 6 times lower than that of ordinary NiMH batteries. Therefore I'm in the process of replacing most of my existing rechargeable cells to the Sanyo eneloop.

Thanks to lower self-discharge rate you'll discover a lot more applications for eneloop cells in your house such as in clocks and remote controls. Do NOT use those cell in smoke detectors since their discharge voltage profile is very different from that of alkaline cells. Also don't use them as emergency flash lights batteries in your car because the higher temperature during summer time will probably nullify the advantage of LSD.

[Update on Jan 13 2007]

I have tested six new eneloop AAA cells dated "2006-06'. The average residue charge is 589mAh and the freshly charged capacity is 827mAh. This implies a self-discharge rate of 29% in 7 months which is consistent with the rate for AA cells (26% loss in 6 months).

[Update on Jan 29 2007]

The Rayovac "Hybrid" rechargeable NiMH batteries are now available at Walmart priced at only $[...] for 4-pack of AA or AAA cells. It is also advertised to have low self-discharge rate but not as low as that for eneloop. The eneloop is supposed to retain 85% charge in 12 months (when stored at 20 degree C) whereas Hybrid is supposed to retain 80% charge in 6 months (no mention of temperature).

[Update on June 3 2007]

In my 2-month self-discharge test using four different brands of NiMH cells. Hybrid and eneloop came up neck-and-neck!

Room temperature: 60-62 degree F (16-17 degree C). All capacities measured are average of 2-cells.

- Sanyo eneloop 2000 purchased Jan 2007.

Initial capacity measured: 2070mAh

Capacity after 62 days: 1796mAh (-13.2%)

(Note: my previous result for eneloop showed -18% but I repeated the test and it did better this time)

- Rayovac Hybrid 2100 purchased Jan 2007.

Initial capacity measured: 2155mAh

Capacity after 62 days: 1859mAh (-13.8%)

- LaCrosse 2000 purchased Jan 2006.

Initial capacity measured: 1902mAh

Capacity after 62 days: 1417mAh (-26%)

- SONY 2300 purchased Sep 2004.

Initial capacity measured: 2210mAh

Capacity after 62 days: 1309mAh (-41%)

So neither eneloop nor Hybrid did as well as advertised but they are still significantly better than previous generation of NiMH cells. So you can't go wrong with either brand.

Duracell Rechargeable AAA NiMH Batteries MIGNON/HR03/DC2400 (4 Batteries)

All they are supposed to be plus a couple of mAh's4

OK. So notice most of the complaints are about the shipping time not the quality of the product.

Ordered 3/26 received in two days with prime.

As others have mentioned these are 900mAh batteries.

Ran the 4 cells through a few charge-discharge cycles on a BC-900 charger (also a good product available here). All of the batteries tested above 900mAh. 902 926 928 and 937mAh. This is with only a few cycles on them so it might creep up later but should not be much.

This is better performance than less expensive brands (ultralast etc.) Those seem to test at only about 50% of the cells above the stated capacity although they are often at least 85% of listed capacity.

Just my experience with a small sample size. Choose which is best for you.

Would be 5 stars but could be a bit less expensive. Only a minor complaint.

Update 8/2/06

Used these in a GPS unit and MP3 Player mainly. Probably have been recharged around 10x each. Retested now they are at 900 924 930 and 932. so not much change

Yuasa Enitime AAA Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries (4-Pack)

Need more batteries like these.5

Review is for the Enitime AA:

----------------------------------

GS Yuasa is a Japanese company that makes batteries mostly for sport vehicles.

My Enitime AAs came pre-charged with my new universal remote control. "Technology from Japan - Made in China". So far performance is comparable with my other low discharge batteries.

Regular NiMh batteries are old school; these new batteries are greener and better.

Pros:

-For a rechargeable battery these batteries does not need to be charged before you use it for the first time; right from the packaging into your gadgets.

-They last a long time.

-Does not need special charger. You can use your existing NiMh charger.

Cons:

-This later technology is still expensive.

Other brands of low-discharged batteries are Eneloops by Sanyo Duracell Hybrid by Rayovac etc.More detail ...

Tenergy High capacity NiMH Rechargeable battery package: 12 AA 2600 mAh + 12 AAA 1000 mAh

cheap but dont believe the AA's mAh rating!3

Pros:

1. They are much much cheaper than others in the market.

2. Even if they are overrating the AA ones [see below] all that means that I will have to recharge them a little sooner. I am willing to take that over paying $ 3 to $4 per cell for other brands!!

3. AAA ones measure nearly 1000 mAh! They are rated at 1000 so they are good!

Cons:

I have a high end charger from Maha - MH-C9000 WizardOne Charger-Analyzer . It is able to tell exactly what the capacity of a battery is. I have tested at least 7 or 8 of my 25 or so Tenergy AA batteries. All measure around 1500 - 1600 mAh. Note that these batteries were bought in the last year or two. They are not brand new.

I even did many refresh cycles even after a couple of break-in cycles [that is supposed to recover under used cells] the capacity does not increase.

Hence I can say for sure....they are overrating them.

By the way my 3-4 year old energizer cells [2500 mAh] from Costco also test around 2000 - 2100 mAh on my analyser. So maybe age is a factor. But at least the energizers are closer to the 2500 they claim!More detail ...

Rayovac Rechargeable Hybrid Batteries AAA-size 4-count Carded Pack (Pack of 2)

Finally - a rechargeable that I actually like!5

It's an on-going love/hate relationship. I really want to find a rechargeable battery that 1 - takes a charge and 2 - holds a charge. NiCads were not the answer because the capacity was too low they drained over time and there was that annoying "memory" thing. It looked like NiMH's were a good fix but I got ticked off that there was never any juice left when I went to use them. For a long time I used re-chargeable alkaline but if they drained to zero they were junk; also they stopped making them.

So here comes the Hybrid from Rayovac and I must say that I really like them. They take a charge and they hold it for a long time. Proof? - I have a high end flash for my DSLR. It uses 4 AA batteries. It takes a lot of juices to fire off a flash (FYI - it will illuminate the entire backyard at night and I have a big back yard!). One drawback of the big flash is the re-cycle time. When you shoot you do not want to wait for the unit to re-charge for the next photo. The answer is to always use fresh alkaline batteries but this is expensive and a waste. I was pleased that these Hybrids recycle faster than brand new alkalines (I was surprised at this) AND they can sit in my flash for months and still be ready to go when I need them.

Finally - someone has got it right!

Sony Cycle Energy AAA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries (4-Pack)

Finally! Good rechargeable batteries.5

For many years rechargeable batteries (AAA AA C D) have been very disappointing because they "self-discharge" in a week or two while waiting to be used (or sitting on a store shelf). That's why you must always charge new batteries before using them.

These new Sony batteries finally solve the problem. They self-discharge very slowly keeping 90% of their charge after a year of storage. I have been using several AAA and AA Sony rechargeable batteries for a month now and am very pleased and impressed. I only wish that C and D cells were available.More detail ...

Rechargeable and always ready5

It is very convenient to have spare rechargeable battereies on hand. This way you always have fresh batteries for your electronics. I am currently in Iraq and I use these batteries for my headlamp and Bose noise cancelling headphones. These batteries seem to hold a charge longer that traditional batteries and it is very convenient to know that you always have a fresh set of batteries available. It is the worst thing for your batteries to die and not have a spare. I switched to rechargables about a year ago and will never go back.More detail ...

Duracell Pre Charged Rechargeable Nimh AAA Batteries 4-Pack

An eneloop by any other name...4

[Updated Dec 21 2008]

I was only half-right when I boldly proclaimed that "Duracell Pre Charged AAA are rebranded Sanyo eneloop cells" in my original review. It turns out that the first batch of Duracell AAA cells I bought from Amazon are made in Japan and those are identical to eneloop (both mechanically and electrically). But lately I bought some more Duracell AAA from a warehouse club. Those are made in China and they are identical to the Rayovac Hybrid (see my scan in the Customer Images section). Note that the Rayovac Hybrid AAA has an average capacity of about 780mAh (compared to about 830mAh for eneloop AAA) so is not as good a value.

[Original review follows]

Judging from similarity of technical specifications and physical shapes of (+) and (-) terminals I am convinced that the Duracell Pre Charged NiMH cell is actually Sanyo Eneloop underneath a different wrapper. Therefore all the good things you heard about eneloop apply to Duracell 'Pre Charged' too.

My own testing has shown that the capacity of eneloop AAA cell is slightly above the claimed 800mAh. The Rayovac Hybrid AAA is usually cheaper but its capacity is slightly below 800mAh. Both brands are able to retain at least 85% of their charge after three months of storage. Just pick whichever brand is on-sale and you can't go wrong.

One small problem with the Duracell 'Pre Charged' cell is that: it looked too similar to the well-known 'Copper Top' alkaline cell. So there is a good chance that people may mistaken it for a disposable cell. Personally I prefer the distinctive-looking white case of the eneloop cell.

Duracell Pre Charged Rechargeable Nimh Batteries Combo one charger 4 AA and 4 AAA batteries

New Duracell 'Value Charger' is a _slightly_ better value now4

This package (Duracell Pre Charged Rechargeable Nimh Batteries Combo) contains the Duracell CEF14NC 'Value Charger' four Duracell DX1500 Pre Charged AA cells (2000mAh) and four DX2400 AAA cells (800mAh).

Duracell pre charged cells are either rebranded Sanyo eneloop ('white top') or Rayovac Hybrid ('black top'). But there is no way to know which version you are going to receive. Incidentally I have examined dozens of those packages in a famous warehouse club. Majority of them contain AA 'black top' cells with just a few containing 'white top'. All AAA cells are 'black top' only.

The new Duracell 'Value Charger' offers several improvements over the previous version (which was also called 'CEF14NC'):

- It accepts 100-240V universal AC input (instead of just 120V AC)

- It can charge up to 4 AAA cells (instead of just 2 AAA)

The charging current is same as before: 360mA when charging AA cells 180mA for AAA cells. That means it take about 6-7 hours to recharge a pair of exhausted AA cells.

One remaining drawback with this charger is that it still charges in pairs. That is either 2 or 4 cells. This is very inconvenient when you have appliance that requires either 1 or 3 cells. Now you're left with one cell that you cannot charge. If you try to charge one exhausted cell together with one that is full then the second cell will be over-charged (becuase the charger only stops when the combined voltage of two cells is high enough). NiMH cells are fairly robust so they are unlikely to burst or leak when over-charged occasionally. But over-charging is very bad for battery lifespan in the long run.

If all of your battery-operated appliances require only even number of cells then this package is still a good value. But if you do need to charge odd number of cells occasionally then I recommend buying the Sanyo Eneloop 2 Pack AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries w/ Charger in addition to this one. It contains a compact charger 'MDR02' that can handle 1-2 cells and it recharges much faster.

Duracell DC2400B4N Rechargeable Batteries NiMH AAA Size 4-Count Packages (Pack of 2)

Don't confuse those with Duracell 'Pre Charged' batteries3

I can't believe it! Just when we thought we've got the Duracell battery color scheme figured out those folks at Duracell pulled another cheap trick out of their collective... hat!

To recall here is the color scheme for Duracell AA/AAA batteries:

- Duracell alkaline cell has the famous 'copper top' and a black bottom

- Traditional Duracell Rechargeable NiMH (DC2400) cell is green and black in color

- Newer Duracell Pre Charged NiMH cell has a 'copper top' and a green/black bottom

The latest batch of rechargeable AA/AAA NiMH cells from Duracell all have the 'copper top' and green/black bottom similar to that for 'Pre Charged' version. However those cells don't say 'Pre Charged' on them. Instead they have their capacity printed (2650mAh for Duracell DC1500 AA 1000mAh for Duracell DC2400B4N AAA). It is important to know that: those are NOT the low-self-discharge type like Sanyo Eneloop. They are traditional NiMH cells which have higher capacity but suffer from rapid self-discharge problem. So even though their prices may look attractive those are no bargains.

Remember: "If it doesn't say 'Pre Charged' put it back!"

Long Lasting Power - Highly Recommended5

Duracell is our favorite brand of batteries for our high drain electronics. These AAAs generally last a full day or two longer than Maxell 723815 LR03 AAA Cell 36 Pack Box Battery (which are a good value) in our MP3 speakers but you are going to pay about 18 cents more apiece (50 cents vs 32 cents).

These are good to use when traveling since they will likely last much longer than generics and are less likely to need replacing at a critical moment.

Highly Recommended!
